On the New Caucus & Term Limits

In the 1990s . . .

New Caucus leaders spoke passionately about the need for fresh voices running the PSC, and suggested that the previous PSC leadership (Unity Caucus and Irwin Polishook) had been around for too long.

Nine years later . . .

New Caucus leaders Barbara Bowen and Steve London don't seem to like the idea of term limits any more.

But . . .

When applied to other groups, New Caucus leaders have continued to gush about how term limits are necessary for democracy.

  • In 2001, the New Caucus-dominated Delegate Assembly welcomed the "drastic change"that term limits would bring to the New York City Council.

  • That same year, former PSC secretary Cecilia McCall (New Caucus) celebrated the "historic opportunity"that term limits for the Council gave to the PSC.

  • In 2008, McCall recalled that the PSC "seized the opportunity afforded us when term limits were established for the City Council."

The New Caucus regime views term limits as good for the New York City Council—but not good for the PSC, at least if Barbara Bowen and Steve London have to give up their power. Alas, it seems that the New Caucus regime is unwilling to apply the same standards to itself that it has called for applying to other groups.

The best way to term-limit Barbara Bowen and Steve London is to vote for the CUNY ALLIANCE. THAT'S UNION DEMOCRACY.
