Professor James Blake is a Professor in the Department of Student Life at the Borough of Manhattan Community College. Prior to coming to City University Professor Blake was an active member of DC-37 Social Service Employees Union, local 371, and he was a member of the PSC BMCC Executive Committee of the New Caucus. Professor Blake has a long history of campus activism and community leadership. He serves as faculty representative to the Fitterman Hall Advisory Committee, President of the BMCC Black Faculty and Staff Association, Department representative on the College Senate, and Faculty Advisor to the Student Government Association. Blake also is the recipient of numerous community Service awards; The New York Christian Times 'Front Page Award' as a leader for the 21 Century, honored by CBS- T.V. as one of the 15 people in the tri-state area whose work best exemplies the ideas of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. For his community work, he was the recipient of the 'King of Queens' award from the Queens Tribune Newspaper. His life struggles and personal triumph over adversity were featured in an hour long presentation on ABC-TV, "Like It Is" program hosted by the award winning journalist, Gil Noble. Professor Blake is a long time community organizer and a former elected District leader in the 29th Assembly District in Queens; and works closely with many Federal, State, and Local officials. In recognition of his community service and leadership skills, Professor Blake has received numerous citations from elected officials. Professor Blake received his B.S. in Chemistry from North Carolina Central University and his MSW from Columbia University School of Social Work, and holds a New York State License as a Mental Health Counselor. He believes that the Faculty, Professional Staff and Students are the heart of the University. Specifically, when the Faculty and Professional Staff members are well paid, have good benefits and working conditions, the students are better served and the university can better achieve its mission. He is married to Dr. Bessie W. Blake, an award winning author, former Dean of the College of New Rochelle, and former Adjunct Professor at LaGuardia Community College.
