Thea Pignataro is Chair of the Mathematics Department at City College. She came to CCNY in 1990, after receiving her PhD in mathematical physics from Princeton in 1984 and holding postdoctoral positions at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifique, the CUNY Graduate Center, the Courant Institute of NYU, and Columbia University. She was an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow from 1990 to 1994. She served her Department as Assistant Chair and Major Advisor (2003-6), Director of Graduate Studies (2004-6), Chair of the Pure Math Committee (1998-present), and on its Executive Committee (1991-1994, 2003-present). Her college service includes the CLAS Faculty Council (1991-1994, 2006-present), with a year on its Executive Committee, and the CCNY Retention Committee (2007-present), which is devoted to student success. She has also served as treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of a 501(c)3 nonprofit theater company (1993-7), as well as on a coop Board of Directors (2007-present). Last year, she was elected an Officer at Large of her local PSC-CUNY chapter, thus serves on its Executive Committee and actively participates in labor-management meetings. She strongly believes that the purpose of a union is to secure the best possible wages, benefits, working conditions, and job security, for ALL of its members. CUNY has fallen far behind other universities in these respects and we must turn the tide. It is time for change and to put actions behind sentiment. That is why she became involved in her local chapter and now seeks a university-wide office.
